INFORMATION FOR EISENHOWER FELLOWSHIPS APPLICANTS
Eisenhower Fellowships’ South Asia Regional Program is an intensive seven-week professional and leadership development program available to individuals who have demonstrated leadership and positive impact in their home countries. The fellowship includes five weeks of individually planned meetings and events throughout the United States. It also includes two weeks of group activities with other Fellows: an Opening Seminar to prepare Fellows for their travels and individual meetings, a mid-program retreat at the Grand Canyon, and a Closing Seminar for Fellows to share their learnings and fellowship outcomes. Attendance throughout the program, including both seminars and the Grand Canyon retreat, is required for all Fellows. Fellows are also expected to participate actively in the Alumni Network in the years following their U.S. travels.
The five-week personalized travel itinerary is collaboratively designed by the Fellow and an Eisenhower Fellowships’ Program Officer in order to ensure alignment with Fellow goals and optimal opportunities for productive exchange of ideas and experiences. This process requires thoughtful effort and substantial time commitment on the Fellow’s part prior to arrival in the U.S.
Eisenhower Fellowships places strong emphasis on the section of the application addressing fellowship objectives and anticipated outcomes, as well as the preliminary program design. As for the latter, it should delineate the nature of appointments desired, and the specific issues to be addressed in these meetings. This section of the application helps to confirm the extent to which the applicant might benefit from the program, and forms the basis for initial research and planning undertaken by the Program Officer to develop the fellowship program. It therefore becomes a vital part of the program itself, so the more information provided the better.
Fellows’ spouses may accompany them for up to half the length of the program. However, children may not accompany Fellows or their spouses on fellowship travel. Fellows must agree to return to their country at the end of the fellowship period, in accordance with U.S. law. Fellowships are awarded for the specific timeframe listed above and cannot be postponed. If urgent circumstances require a Fellow to return to his/her home country during the program period, the absence must be limited to no more than one week, and the Fellow must cover all travel and related expenses.
Please answer all questions in the attached application in English.

SOUTH ASIA REGIONAL PROGRAM
Eisenhower Fellowships will hold a South Asia Regional Program (SARP) in the fall of 2012. The program will include Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It will build on the momentum created in these countries, and the EF network in the region as a whole, as a result of the 2004 South Asia Regional Program. Given the growing importance of these countries to each other and continuing importance to the United States, this program comes at an ideal time. It will enhance existing relationships and foster new ones among leaders in the region which will influence the future of South Asia and its cooperation with the United States. In addition, cross-border linkages between alumni in these countries will benefit from an infusion of new, highly engaged Eisenhower Fellows.
Although location and scope are still to be determined, alumni Fellows are already discussing the possibility of holding a conference in the region before the SARP Fellows travel to the United States. As was the case with the Paris conference held prior to the 2009 Fueling Growth Common Interest Program, this would provide Fellows with an opportunity to address issues of key concern, meet each other as well as alumni Fellows, and expose them to the vitality of the Eisenhower network.
SELECTION
Utilizing competitive nominations processes directed by in-country committees comprised of national leaders and alumni Fellows, the SARP Fellows will be selected based on their leadership achievements to date, potential for future impact, and plans for tangible outcomes. The SARP will consist of Fellows diversified by gender and profession from the public sector, private sector, and civil society. EF will not set a specific numerical quota for any of the participating countries; as with every EF program, the primary selection criterion will be demonstrated excellence.
PROGRAM
SARP Fellows will pursue rigorous, individually-tailored programs that will provide them with the opportunity to meet with leaders in their fields, attend pertinent conferences, and participate in relevant site visits. They will also participate in a number of group events, including the opening and closing seminars in Philadelphia as well as activities planned in conjunction with valued EF sponsors and trustees.
OUTCOMES
EF challenges Fellows to identify specific projects they will undertake upon completion of travel, often in collaboration with other Eisenhower Fellows, and to remain engaged with the EF alumni network.
